Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says the government remains committed to supporting Jamaica’s most vulnerable citizens through the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP).

The NSHP initiative is the government’s flagship programme targeting the vulnerable and providing sustainable housing solutions for those in dire need to ensure that no Jamaican is left behind.

Prime Minister Holness emphasized that the true value of the NSHP lies in its ability to deliver lasting support to thousands of Jamaicans facing extreme poverty and unfortunate circumstances.

“The real achievement is that there is an enduring programme supported by a budget that will over the long run ensure that any Jamaican who falls in this situation of having no means, no income, is a victim of unfortunate circumstances. This is a programme where the government can intervene in your circumstances and assist you. We must always prioritize the poor and the most vulnerable in all our actions,” said Prime Minister Holness.

The Prime Minister estimated that there are approximately 6,000 households across Jamaica in severe poverty, with no means whatsoever to improve their living conditions.

Prime Minister Holness also highlighted that the government has already built 259 units, benefiting approximately 900 Jamaicans to date.

“We are committed to helping our people. One-by-one, five-by-five, seven-by-seven—almost every week, we are handing over a home to a needy Jamaican. This is the government’s pledge to ensure that we take care of the poor and most vulnerable in our society,” Prime Minister Holness affirmed.

As part of the government’s broader commitment to social upliftment, the programme operates with the long-term goal of addressing the nation’s housing crisis while promoting sustainable community development and enhancing the quality of life for the poor and disadvantaged.

Prime Minister Holness was speaking yesterday (September 25) at a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony in Oracabessa, St. Mary, where Ms. Judith Watson and her family received a three-bedroom unit under the programme.
