Government Invests $75 Million to Light Up Sabina Park and Revive Cricket to the Days of Glory

The Government of Jamaica continues to demonstrate its commitment to national development through real, tangible investment.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness visited Sabina Park last evening (June 16) to inspect the installation of new lighting infrastructure, funded by a $75 million allocation from the budget of the Government of Jamaica.

This is part of a broader initiative to revitalize cricket in Jamaica and ensure that Sabina Park meets modern international standards.

The upgraded lighting system, once fully installed, will allow Sabina Park to host both day and night matches, including international fixtures.

The lights meet international broadcasting and visibility requirements, setting a new standard for cricket infrastructure in the region.

In addition to the lighting investment, the Government of Jamaica has successfully secured the support of the Government of India for the installation of two state-of-the-art high-definition LED scoreboards. These scoreboards were custom-built and tested at Indian Premier League (IPL) stadiums before being shipped to Jamaica. They will replace the obsolete monochrome board and significantly enhance both fan experience and broadcast quality.

Prime Minister Holness emphasized the strategic value of these investments, stating:

“There has been much criticism about government support for cricket. But player development and commercial viability both require serious infrastructure. We have quietly made those investments so that aspirations can become reality.”

He continued: “This is a tangible outcome of our strong bilateral relationship with India. While others talk, we have delivered.”

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, the Hon. Olivia Grange, also expressed her pride in the project, noting that Sabina Park is not just a stadium but a national heritage site.

“We believe in upgrading our heritage. This is about putting our money where our mouth is. We have acted, not talked. The new scoreboard, the lighting—this is all about choosing Jamaica.”

The Government has also committed $100 million over three years to develop cricket across the island, with $40 million already allocated in the last fiscal year. Those funds are being used in collaboration with the Jamaica Cricket Association, with a special focus on primary schools and youth development.

With these investments, Sabina Park is on track to host international cricket once again. Day and night matches will soon become a reality, thanks to deliberate action and strong partnerships.

The Government of Jamaica remains focused on building a stronger, modern Jamaica through smart investments, meaningful partnerships, and unwavering commitment to national progress.
