Prime Minister Reiterates Welcome to Returning Jamaicans, Renews Warning Against Criminality

In light of recent changes to immigration enforcement policies in the United States, which have resulted in the repatriation of hundreds of Jamaicans, some with criminal records, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has again issued a strong yet compassionate appeal: return home to rebuild, not to destabilize.
“We understand that the shifting immigration policies in the United States have placed many Jamaicans in difficult and uncertain circumstances,” said Prime Minister Holness. “Let me be clear: Jamaica is your homeland. You are not homeless, and you are not stateless. This is your country, and we welcome you home.”
While acknowledging the hardships faced by some Jamaicans living abroad, the Prime Minister cautioned against any attempt to import criminal conduct into the country.
“If your intent is criminal, expect to be dealt with firmly,” he warned. “Do not come back here to destroy your homeland or dismantle what we have been working very hard to create, so that you wouldn’t have had to leave in the first place.”
The Prime Minister was direct in his message to those who may be tempted to return to Jamaica with criminal intent, stating, “Disabuse yourself of this notion that you can only make it through crime and therefore you’re going to join a gang and become a part of the problem.”
At the same time, he extended a heartfelt invitation to law-abiding Jamaicans abroad, encouraging them to return and help build a stronger, more prosperous nation.
“If you’re finding it difficult where you are, come back here. Don’t stay there and suffer. Come back home,” he said. “Come back and let us build your homeland so that you can stand up with pride with the citizens of the world about your country.”
Prime Minister Holness emphasized that the Government continues to implement social and economic development programmes to improve conditions at home, reduce crime, and expand opportunities.
He urged. “Let us work together to build the prosperous nation that Jamaica is destined to be.”
The Ministry of National Security, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, has been tasked with strengthening reintegration support for deported nationals, ensuring they are given avenues to contribute meaningfully, while also protecting the safety and stability of communities.
The Prime Minister’s message reflects a broader national commitment to managing repatriation with empathy and vigilance, welcoming Jamaicans home while preserving the rule of law.
