Government Reinforces Commitment to Retaining Talent in the Healthcare Sector and Building National Wealth to Improve Quality of Life
“I encourage you to stay and contribute to the economic growth (of Jamaica). We need you. And for the first time in a long time, remaining in Jamaica, working in Jamaica, will be rewarding. Your efforts will yield results. It is a long struggle, but we are at the point now where we are starting to see the benefits.”

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says there is a critical need to retain skilled healthcare professionals within the country to advance Jamaica’s economic growth and development.
This as the Government continues to improve Jamaica’s healthcare infrastructure and services.
However, Prime Minister Holness emphasized that while investments in physical infrastructure are vital, a robust healthcare system cannot thrive without a dedicated and well-supported workforce. He acknowledged the historical trend of Jamaican talent migrating abroad and stressed that he is committed to reversing this trend by enhancing the healthcare sector.
“Our nation has long been a net exporter of talent, contributing to global projects and professions,” said Prime Minister Holness. “But Jamaica needs its best and brightest to stay and contribute to our national development. Our focus is now on creating an environment where our skilled professionals can thrive and build a stronger healthcare system right here at home.”
The government has already made substantial investments in healthcare, including the construction of new hospitals, repair of clinics, and advancements in health technology. The Prime Minister said these efforts are part of a broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery and address the shortage of healthcare personnel.
Importantly, Prime Minister Holness highlighted that the introduction of conditional scholarships, such as those handed out on Friday, are aimed at encouraging graduates to remain and work in Jamaica.
In addition to these targeted measures, the Prime Minister mentioned that the administration’s broader economic strategy focuses on creating and sustaining national wealth. He said by strengthening the national economy, improving labour force productivity, and making comprehensive public investments, the government aims to ensure sustainable funding for essential services that enhances the overall quality of life and supports professional growth.
Prime Minister Holness also addressed concerns about the time required for these changes to materialize. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making Jamaica a more attractive place for professionals to work and live.
“I encourage you to stay and contribute to the economic growth. We need you. And for the first time in a long time, remaining in Jamaica, working in Jamaica, will be rewarding. Your efforts will yield results. It is a long struggle, but we are at the point now where we are starting to see the benefits,” he added.
The government’s strategy reflects a commitment to building national wealth through a balanced approach that integrates economic development with investments in human capital. Prime Minister Holness said that by aligning these efforts, Jamaica aims to create a healthcare system that not only meets current needs but also stands resilient for the future.
Prime Minister Holness was speaking on Friday (August 30) at the Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship Awards Ceremony, where over 600 recipients received scholarships amounting to over J$500 million.
