Prime Minister Commits to Infrastructure Development and Economic Transformation in the Parish of Westmoreland

The Government of Jamaica is intensifying its focus on improving infrastructure and driving economic transformation in the parish of Westmoreland.
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness made the declaration today (Friday, January 24) while in the parish to hand over four social housing units under the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP).
Dr. Holness acknowledged the parish’s potential and the urgent need to address longstanding issues.
Prime Minister Holness has outlined a comprehensive approach that will deliver targeted solutions to benefit the residents of Westmoreland.
Dr. Holness highlighted key priorities, including infrastructure development, enhanced health services, and economic opportunities.
“Westmoreland is in need of specific attention as it relates to infrastructure, roads, and water. And I am very much aware in terms of health facilities. I am aware that the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital is indeed overburdened at this time.”
Prime Minister Holness assured residents that plans to address these challenges will feature prominently in the government’s upcoming budget.
Dr. Holness emphasized the creation of an economic plan aimed at unlocking the parish’s potential while generating sustainable income opportunities for young people.
“Westmoreland has many assets, many opportunities, and we are going to ensure that we put in place an economic plan for Westmoreland, which will develop not just your roads and your water but provide an economy which will give income to the many young persons who are in this parish,” Prime Minister Holness affirmed.
Among the initiatives under consideration is the revitalization of the parish’s tourism and agricultural sectors.
The Prime Minister noted the unique value of the coastline and the town of Negril as a special tourism product requiring “special attention, refreshing, and rebranding.”
Agriculture, a vital pillar of the local economy, will also receive focused investments to empower residents and boost productivity.
Prime Minister Holness emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that the people of Westmoreland receive the attention they deserve.
“We are going to be focusing on the parish of Westmoreland to ensure that the people of Westmoreland finally get the attention they deserve, both in terms of their infrastructure and in terms of their economy.”
The government’s interventions also extend to social programmes, such as the NSHP, providing housing for vulnerable residents. The Prime Minister noted that these needed interventions have a meaningful impact on families and communities.
