Jamaicans to Benefit from Major Job and Investment Boost as Government Breaks Ground on New Port Expansion

The Government of Jamaica has officially broken ground on the new Westlands Port Expansion Project, a major infrastructure development that is set to bring more jobs, better roads, and increased economic opportunity for Jamaicans.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, speaking on Thursday (July 10) at the signing and groundbreaking ceremony in Kingston, emphasized that the project isn’t just about expanding Jamaica’s shipping capacity; it’s about transforming lives and strengthening the economy in ways that every Jamaican can feel.

“This is not just a port project. This is about creating work for our people, bringing in more investment, and making sure Jamaica stays strong in a competitive world,” said Prime Minister Holness. “From day one, our goal has been to build an economy where Jamaicans can thrive, and this project is a major step in that direction.”

The Westlands Port Expansion will immediately unlock hundreds of new, high-quality jobs, particularly in construction, logistics, and cargo handling. In the long term, it will help Jamaica attract more global trade, leading to even more job creation and small business opportunities for Jamaicans.

The first phase of the expansion is backed by a US$80 million investment and will transform 15 hectares of land into a modern port space. This means more space for cargo, shorter wait times for vessels, and faster movement of goods, ultimately supporting local businesses and improving Jamaica’s standing in global trade.

The new development will build on the success of earlier port investments, which have already:

  • Increased cargo volumes by 58%
  • Created over 500 well-paying jobs
  • Pushed Kingston into the Top 10 fastest-growing global port terminals
  • Boosted our ranking to 81st on Lloyd’s List of Top 100 Ports

These are not just numbers; they reflect real progress for working Jamaicans and the promise of even greater opportunity ahead.

The Westlands expansion is one part of a much broader plan to turn Jamaica into the Caribbean’s leading logistics and trade hub. The Government’s full strategy includes:

  • The upcoming 700-acre Caymanas Special Economic Zone, which will house logistics companies and manufacturing jobs
  • Better connections to highways, airports, and telecommunications infrastructure
  • A fully digital system for cargo and port operations, making our systems faster and more efficient
  • Strong policies to attract more international investment while protecting the interests of Jamaicans

“We are investing in systems that will support our people, empower our businesses, and attract capital that creates long-term national growth,” Prime Minister Holness said.

As part of the port upgrade, the Government is also investing in better infrastructure around the Newport West area, upgrading roads, water, and sewage systems to make sure workers, business owners, and residents can benefit from a cleaner, more efficient, and safer environment.

This is being done in partnership with agencies like the Port Authority of Jamaica, Kingston Wharves Limited, the National Works Agency, and others.

With global trade shifting rapidly, Jamaica is moving to secure its place as a logistics leader and ensure ordinary Jamaicans benefit from the country’s growth.

“We are open for business. We are ready to build. And most importantly, we are doing this for our people,” said Prime Minister Holness. “Jamaica is rising, stronger, smarter, and more connected to the world, and Jamaicans will be at the heart of that progress.”
